COLUMBUS, Ohio - Two things are common about the betting line in recent Ohio State-Michigan games. The favorite usually wins and the favorite usually is Ohio State. That bodes well for the Buckeyes. The Tide began New Year’s Day with a convincing 31-14 victory over No. 4 Notre Dame from AT&T Stadium Friday afternoon. Quarterback Mac Jones completed 25 of 30 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns while Heisman favorite Devonta Smith hauled in seven catches for 130 yards and three touchdowns.
Following Alabama’s Rose Bowl win, Ohio State met with Clemson in the Sugar Bowl. The Buckeyes and Tigers traded a few back-to-back score before Ohio State pulled away late in the first half. Quarterback Justin Fields played through what appeared to be a side injury, putting together a heroic performance (385 passing yards and six touchdowns) and leading OSU to a 49-28 win.
Ohio State looked the best it did all season against an elite Clemson team, but the Buckeyes will once again be the underdog when it meets with Alabama in the title game. The Tide are now an eight-point favorite over Ohio State.

This might be a bit too many points. Ohio State made Clemson look silly Friday night, but continues to be disrespected by the sportsbooks.
There’s no doubt No. 1 Alabama should be the favorite. The Tide are led by a three-headed monster in Mac Jones, Devonta Smith and Najee Harris. The Buckeyes will have their hands full on defense.
Luckily, Ohio State’s pass rush was the best its been all season Friday night. If the Buckeyes continue their defensive line dominance, Alabama could be in trouble.

The 2020 Big Ten Conference will begin in Week 8, in a schedule of eight intraconference games.
Expectations for Ohio State are so high again this year, that bettors looking to cash an 'over' ticket on their regular season win total odds will need them to run the table once again. QB Justin Fields enters the year as a Heisman front-runner, and there is no denying that the Buckeyes are one of the most talented teams in the land.
However, a road trip to Oregon in Week 2 is never an easy trip for any visiting program, and while they do get to host the hated Michigan Wolverines this year, they've got back-to-back weeks in October where they've got to go to Michigan State and Penn State. Ohio State will still be laying points in all of those games, but needing to run the table on an 'over' play leaves next to nothing in terms of wiggle room for them this year.
Three games for the Buckeyes are already classified in this category and they are the three that you would expect to be here.
Their trip to Happy Valley to face Penn State has a posted line of -6.5. And then there is the annual showdown with Michigan, a rivalry game that the Buckeyes have won eight years in a row. Current odds have Ohio State laying -11.5 points at home for that contest this year, and if they cover double digit spreads in 2020 at the rate they did in 2019, this number will do nothing but go up.
The Buckeyes are a clear cut favorite to claim another Big 10 title in 2020 and rightfully so. With them already listed as favorites -6.5 or more in their perceived three toughest games of the year, the lofty spreads they'll have to cover in the rest of their games are going to be large, meaning that outright wins shouldn't be an issue for this team.
Barring significant injury, Ohio State should end up winning the Big Ten conference again in 2020, as long as they are able to do what they've done for the past eight years and beat Michigan. At home, they likely will, so it's more of a question if bettors want to lay the -230 price on them or not. It may arguably be a better wager then going 'over' their win total of 11.
Same question comes up here in terms of wanting to lay the price or not, as a Big 10 title all but assures the winner of a playoff spot, as long as they've got one or fewer losses to their name. It's one of the deepest conferences from top to bottom in the country, and that has worked against the conference as a whole in both 2017-18 and 2018-19 when the Big 10 was on the outside of the College Football Playoffs, and three of the past four years have seen Big 10 teams ranked 5th or 6th to miss out.
But the 2020 version of Ohio State isn't likely to be involved in those types of questionable selection committee scenarios, as they'll likely either win the conference with ease (one loss or less), or stumble a couple of times and get beat by one of their rivals for the conference crown.
The futures odds on Ohio State winning the National Championship all might be the better betting play to make from a value standpoint, as they'll no doubt be 'live' to go the distance if they do indeed find themselves in the playoff. This way, you don't have to lay a -230 price if you would prefer not to, and should they be one of the final four teams left standing, future hedging opportunities are more readily available to bettors who choose to go this route.
The Buckeyes currently have two players listed in the Heisman Trophy Odds betting market.
2020 should be another year where the Ohio State Buckeyes find themselves in another prominent Bowl game regardless of whether or not it's part of the playoff format or not. As a team with a chalk price to simply make the playoffs, that's something that's hard to ignore, although a potential early season slip up – say, in Oregon – could have their year spiral out of control. But bettors should expect this team to be in the playoff conversation all year long.
Buckeyes QB Justin Fields is the Heisman favorite currently (+350), and while the preseason favorites tend to not get there in the end, bettors can't deny his talent at all. He stepped right into the fire in his first year with Ohio State in 2019, and with how the year ended, he and his teammates have to feel like they've got some unfinished business to attend to in 2020.
Road trips to Oregon and Penn State are some big potential land minds to avoid for them though, and while things vs Michigan have been rather easy for the better part of the past decade, chances are it's not going to be like that forever. Finishing 2020 with an 11-1 straight-up (SU) record and Big 10 title is where the Buckeyes season likely lands, which makes that -230 price on the conference crown something that should be worth laying.
2019 was a year that saw the Ohio State Buckeyes run the table in the regular season, going 12-0 SU and then winning the Big 10 title and earning a CFB Playoff berth as the #2 team in the country because of it. They won all 13 of those games by double digits, were a point spread darling in the betting markets at 9-4 ATS through the Big 10 title game. A run of eight straight ATS wins where they were -14.5 point favorites or greater in every game from Game 2 through Game 9 will be a run many bettors remember for awhile.

Yet, what Ohio State football players will remember is them coughing up a 16-0 lead in the CFB Semi-final game vs Clemson, not punching enough scoring drives into the end zone early, and paying for it later when Clemson scored with under two minutes left in the game to win. That loss sets the Buckeyes up for a year of redemption in 2020, as they are once again loaded with talent across the board and expected to have a shot to play for the national championship once again.
